Re: When should a clone be legal?

We should start by defining what we consider of as the "canonical Minesweeper game" (CMG). This is essentially what we're all playing right now. Cloning the game without allowing the player to cheat is only one of the requirements for being a clone, but it's a very important one. The definition of t...

Re: Win7-like Shift+LMB=RMB/chord legal?

The original game lets you shift-leftclick to chord (as did earlier games that Minesweeper copied this feature from), so I see no problem with this. Good point, I never noticed this. However the win7 behavior allows both this and flagging with the same input, which means you can clear most or all o...

Data structure for optimal-solution calculations

This is an outline of a way to store the data in a board, for use in calculating optimal solutions (or sub-optimal solutions, etc.). The idea is to preprocess the board so that we only keep track of the data we need to and don't have to run floodfill algorithms. It may also be an easier representati...

Re: Win7-like Shift+LMB=RMB/chord - opinions?

For what it's worth, I did end up making a javascript clone that allows the shift+click functionality. (It also has a few other non-official features because it's designed for speedrun-style racing against people who use the win7 version.)

Future sweeper generations will be used to future MS - to this shift key function as well as to guaranteed opening at first click [...] Minesweeper community should be open for everybody interested without forcing him to adapt to archaic game versions This is not a war between "future MS" and "arch...

Re: Win7-like Shift+LMB=RMB/chord - opinions?

There's also an issue you didn't point out: when the only difference between "flag this" and "open this" is whether the shift key is depressed or not, it's a lot easier to make mistakes and blast (or worse, misflag ). I'm sure getting used to this control scheme would help a bit, but the danger...

Re: Win7-like Shift+LMB=RMB/chord legal?

[name removed] brought up the question of whether this is an advantage. I don't think it is. However, I think the question of changing the game mechanics is not related to whether we let people get an advantage, but instead, to whether we change what Minesweeper means. Any significant change in the ...

Re: Breaking Arbiter for fun! :)

Yeah, it's a good thing we have the lucky rule now, because otherwise macro games like this would actually be legit for record entries :) It's interesting that Arbiter breaks if you get a 0.00 on a nontrivial board - but yeah, this would never happen in real play. I know that when I got a 0.00 on Mi...

Re: Quasi-empirical estimation of expected board completion rate

These are probably obvious, but it's good to have these written down in general, if people want to work on formalizing guessing strategies: 1) If two squares are just as likely to be safe, guess the one which is more likely to provide useful information (e.g. making a pattern solvable) when opened. ...

Re: Quasi-empirical estimation of expected board completion rate

I'm going to guess that a rough version of one of EWQ's strategies - choose a pattern that uses fewer mines, when possible - will usually be the best. However, speaking of probabilities, it's interesting to consider that when you hit a situation you can't figure out, it's very likely that all square...

Re: Minesweeper-like logic puzzle program

Encoding it in the save data won't be hard, but I do want to think of an intuitive way to do it. Remember that you also want to be able to mark white and black squares in the editor so you can playtest your logic. So we either need distinguishable symbols, or you have to manually clear out all the n...

Re: Minesweeper-like logic puzzle program

Mm. The problem there is that I would need to be able to distinguish between squares that are marked safe/mines but are *fixed clues*, and squares that the player marked safe/mines. Any ideas? Perhaps a white/black square with "F" or "?" or a dot in it?

Re: Minesweeper-like logic puzzle program

Updated, if anyone cares. I changed some stuff, including - Minesweeper mode works properly now, including saving and loading puzzles - Keeps track of the number of mines (this can also be left undefined), and if you have the wrong number the solution is wrong - Editing controls only show up in edit...

Re: Quasi-empirical estimation of expected board completion rate

Instead of having it play "normally" (i.e. guess wrong and you blast) it might be more fun to have a higher-density game where you just get an error for each mine you hit, and a success for each time you guess right and/or complete a pattern. So then the game would serve up random guess patterns (ge...

Re: Suggested front page changes

I understand the idea that this is also a repository of information about the game in general, but I think it's just way too visible. It should probably be *somewhere* on the site, because we certainly do keep a lot of old stuff like the dead websites, but maybe it should be on the wiki or something...

Do older versions of Arbiter do this too? That might help pinpoint the issue, maybe some new code was added that caused problems on your end. Re: New expert strategy page

The 4 and 5 form a similar kind of combination to the two numbers next to each other. Each number has 5 squares that it doesn't share with the other number, and the difference in the number of mines in those 5 squares must be the same as the difference in the actual clues. So in this case we know th...

I'm guessing it doesn't quite work yet? I don't see anything wrong there. Keep in mind the "Minesweeper mode" checkbox doesn't do anything yet, it's only Mosaik mode so far. Minesweeper-like logic puzzle program

This is currently a work in progress, but I thought certain people (aradesh?) would like to see what I've got so far. http://mzrg.com/js/mosaik/ This lets you play and edit the puzzle that janko.at refers to as "Mosaik". It's also going to support the janko.at "Minesweeper" puzzle type too; the main...
