Re: What is the recommended percentage of mines?

depends on what is fun for you... when i'm in the mood to play my best and fastest game the standard levels with 15.625% and 20.625% are fine. when i'm not in the mood for serious playing or to warm up i enjoy increasing the mine density to the extent at which i hardly ever win a game. i would recom...

Re: When to flag

on beginner: 1 flag per 5 3bv on intermediate: 5-10 flags on a board with low 3bv, 20 flags at most on any other board on expert: provided your record is below 80s, 1 flag per second the most simple guideline might be this: only use a flag when it doesn't cost clicks. the reason you use flags is tha...

The "Minor Errors" Thread

Since most of the threads in this subforum are only about minor corrections to scores on the rankings, i think it's about time for such a thread. I don't have much time right now but as soon as this changes i will merge the other topics with this and will keep a list of unresolved errors in this pos...

Re: Win7-like Shift+LMB=RMB/chord legal?

some of my friends at uni play minesweeper. they started with the win7 version and still use it most of the time. the only feature the missed in our clones was the full screen mode. the lack of openings on the first click is a minor issue and is on the same level as filtering/not generating boards w...

49 mines on 8x8

as of now danny marden is the only one to ever complete 8x8 beginner with 49 mines. i did 1000 attempts today. here is how far i have gotten: and another 1000 on 2012-12-30 lost after 2-10 solved squares 2 - 341 times 3 - 91 4 - 30 5 - 18 6 - 7 7 - 3 8 - 3 9 - 0 10 - 1 it's a too small sample, i'll ...

Re: Win7-like Shift+LMB=RMB/chord legal?

ah and I forgot: SHIFT + left click = chording (only on numbers) so in principle you use only left clicks and SHIFT is your NF / Flagging - Switcher i somehow overread this line the first time. having reread everything i agre with qq. (about the nf paragraph: the only occasion on which "press" woul...

Re: Breaking Arbiter for fun! :)

seeing that the chances for a 2 3bv board are roughly 1 in 20 000, that the first click is always safe and that the second click has to done on one of the other 63 sqaures, your marco needs less than 130 000 attempts. Wouldn't that require my program to actually analyze the board and pick the corre...

can't help you with whether they are readable by *nix stuff. maybe people like tkolar or qqwref have some ideas.

my guessing strategy is mostly intuitive. i can't really say why i click a certain square, other than 'this seems like it might work out nicely'.

have you watched the games? i doubt that any guessing strategy would have won more than 35 games. just have a look at the replays and let me know where you would have clicked elsewhere and why.

decided to try the original suggestion. completed 27 out of 100 games took 1h 12min with many breaks completed <10%: 38 games completed <5%: 35 games completed >90%: 12 unfinished made 2 careless mistakes that lead to lost games so that's a win percentage of: 27% - if you count all games 43% - if yo...

tracking the win percentage also seems irrelevant to me, as many sweepers are able to solve all solvable patterns with enough time. I disagree with this statement, actually; even if everyone were to play perfectly in deterministic situations, there is no consensus on optimal strategy at all for whe...
