Players were ranked on the sum of their best 5 Intermediate and 5 Expert games with unfinished games penalised 999.99 seconds. The tournament lasted 3 hours and used the same Minesweeper version as the Vienna 2006 tournament: Vienna International MineSweeper Meeting 2006 Client (Debug). The tournament used RT+1 but all scores have been converted to Real Time.
Microsoft Hungary sponsored the 5th World Minesweeper Championship which took place 14 April 2007 in Budapest. A computer lab at Corvinus University in the Department of Information Systems was used again as the location. Unlike Budapest 2006 and Vienna 2006 there was no Nonosweeper session. The championship started at 13:30 and finished at 16:30 with live results beamed onto a screen at the front of the room. The best 3 players were awarded Windows Vista Ultimate and the next 3 players were awarded webcams. Due to network issues, Christoph and Damien spent 2 hours after the tournament recovering videos while everyone else went bowling, thus some of the videos have been lost.
Microsoft sponsored the tournament and you can read the original announcement and updated official announcement. The official announcement provides tournament and travel information. It was later decided that the penalty system was too complicated and this was replaced with the much simpler 999.99 second penalty per unfinished game.
Damien wrote a preview of who might win the tournament.
