Mined-Out (1983)

a.k.a. Mined Out, Campo De Minas, Campo Minado

Overview
Mined-Out was written in 1983 by Ian Andrew and published by Quicksilva for various platforms.

The original ZX Spectrum version has 9 levels. Your job is to navigate to the top of the screen using the mine detector. The mine detector works vertically and horizontally and only provides a warning for your current location. Points are awarded for speed, level completion and collecting damsels. The game remembers your high score. Level 2 introduces damsels, Level 3 introduces a Mine Spreader (which lays more mines but makes them visible), Level 5 introduces a Spider that will chase you and...good luck getting further! On Level 8 there is a moving gap you need to cross. On Level 9 your path disappears and you need to reach "Bill the Worm".

The game was popular and ported to other microcomputers. Ian and his brother Chris modified the game for the Dragon 32 (7 levels) in 1983. Quicksilva paid Ian Rowlings to port Mined Out to the BBC Micro (1983) and this was followed with versions for the Acorn Electron (1983), Oric (1984) and Lynx (1984). The original ZX Spectrum version was sold in Spain by Microparadise as Campo Minado (1983) before being translated by Investronica as Campo de Minas (1983). ZX Spectrum versions were later sold on compilations by Software Magazine (Spain, 1985), Microbyte (Spain, 1987) and Your Sinclair Magazine (1991).

Trivia
  • The original ZX Spectrum BASIC code includes a warning message from Ian Andrew: "No Cheating Now!!".
  • The Magnificent 7 compilation is No. 9 in the series (as printed on the cassette) not No. 8 (as printed on the cover).
  • The December 1983 issue of Computer and Video Games Magazines listed their favourite games for various platforms. Mined Out was incorrectly listed as the 9th best game for the Atari! Argus Software acquired Quicksilva and did announce a licencing deal with Atari in June 1984, but there is no evidence and Atari version was ever released.
  • The Investronica release of Mined Out ("Campo de Minas") in Spain was part of a deal with Quicksilva. In exchange Quicksilva obtained the rights to publish Bugaboo ("The Flea") in the UK.
  • The Oric-1 version was written by Adrian Wyard. He told MSGAME (2018) the conversion "needed a tiny bit of 6502 assembler to get the speed up which was a fun challenge as I was only familiar with Z80 at the time." His previous experience was writing a music program for the ZX Spectrum. He was later hired by Microsoft and moved to Seattle in 1987 as a Program Manager for Word 1.0 (on the Macintosh).
