The game is a 21*21 grid filled small mines (*) and large mines (^). There are two tanks which take turns moving and shooting. You change direction and continue moving with the numbers 1, 2, 3, 4 and shoot with the number 5. You have a 600 second time limit to accumulate points. When you shoot a small mine it explodes by itself. When you shoot a large mine it can blow up neighbours in a cascade. Each tank has a separate score with the timer in the middle of the two scores at the bottom of the screen.
Early advertisements by Victory Software state Mine Field was written for the C1P 8K model but also works on the C2P and C4P. Screenshots are from the C4P model. It was released as "34 original PROGRAMS on tape for the unbelievably low price of $29.95!!".
It is unclear whether Bruce Robinson or Alan Stankiewicz wrote the game separately or jointly. Both authors had written OSI games at Aardvark Technical Services before founding Victory Software in 1982 and selling many of the same games. Mine Field was only sold by the latter company. Victory ported their games to the Commodore VIC-20 and 64 but Mine Field was dropped and not listed in the June 1983 Victory Software Catalog.
The following attributes can be used to map the evolution of Minesweeper. Blue cells are confirmed attributes for official versions of Mine Field. Yellow cells are unknown.
