Rover Robot (1974)

Overview
Rover Robot was written in HP2000F BASIC and published in 1975 by the People's Computer Company.

The goal of the game is to cross a 9*9 grid from top to bottom using clues. Each cell contains either "GO" or "STOP" and the number of STOPS depends on whether you play Novice, Regular or Expert mode. Your robot can start anywhere in the top row by typing the coordinates and you win by reaching the bottom row. You lose if you reveal a STOP.

There are no number clues. Instead you can type "LOOK" to be told the number of STOPs directly ahead and in the next row. You also have a limited number of CHECKs which let you open a cell without stepping into it. At any point you can type MAP to see your path. The MAP command is useful because there are no graphics and the game consists of the computer telling you the results of your moves.

The game was proposed by Jeff Sumberg and written by John Robertson. Rover was included in the HP 2000 Contributed Library (Volume V, 1974) which was later published as the book "What to do after you hit Return" in 1975 as a collaboration with PCC.
