The game uses the full 80*25 screen and your job is to collect 2 "victims" by navigating around the screen. There is a one minute time limit. All mines are visible and each second more mines are added to the game. You can choose how many mines per second are added.
The game was published in June 1979 with several bugs. A reader wrote into Practical Computing in September 1979 with bug fixes.
The game was published by ESV Computer Services. Mines are visible on a 64*16 grid with 150 mines and 25 trees. Your job is to navigate from the left side to the right side of the screen. The simplest option is speed 0 (practice level) with no mortars and no machine gun nests. On this setting you can move at your own speed avoiding mines and trees.
Speed levels 1-9 move the player at fixed speeds and are more difficult to win. Walking into a tree makes you unconscious. Mortars will explode in random locations. Machine gun nests fire bullets that are only stopped by trees.
The game allows up to 5 players and saves your best times during the session.
Minefield was written by Dawson for ESV Computer Services and was resold by Computer Port stores in the USA.
The following attributes can be used to map the evolution of Minesweeper. Blue cells are confirmed attributes for official versions of Mine Field. Yellow cells are unknown.
