The original version was a 16*16 grid with a custom number of mines. The object of the game was to cross from the bottom left corner to the top right corner using number clues to avoid mines. There was a countdown timer of 120 seconds and no highscores.
Later versions allowed sizes from 8*8 to 25*25 with a minimum of 10 mines and maximum of (x-1)(y-1) mines. The original "Classic" mode remained but a new "Sweep" mode was added. Sweep mode required all mines to be marked (with a bomb icon) and all safe squares opened. Since you "walk" across the grid you can only open cells adjacent to previously opened cells.
The final preferences menu includes an option for 3D mode but this was never implemented. Selecting Coins will add a Coin counter (between the mine counter and countdown clock) and each hidden coin you find will let you step on a mine without losing the game. Disabling the Ticker option removes the countdown clock. The Smart option automatically opens surrounding cells when you click on an empty cell touching no mines. The right mouse button lets you to toggle between placing bomb icons and questionmarks on cells. You can chord by holding [SHIFT] while pressing the left mouse button.
The surviving version is 2.01 from May 1990 although the About Box still claims to be version 2.00.
Johnson told MSGAME in 2013 that he based Mine on the Macintosh game Mine by Daniel Griscom. Game credits state "based on the Mac version by Daniel Griscom".
The following attributes can be used to map the evolution of Minesweeper. Blue cells are confirmed attributes for official versions of PM Mine. Yellow cells are unknown.
