Cube (1973)



Overview
Cube was written in DEC BASIC in 1973 by Jerimac Ratliff.

"CUBE is a game played on cube with a side dimension of 2. A location is designated by three numbers -- e.g., 1,2,1. The object is to travel from 1,1,1 to 3,3,3 by moving one horizontal or vertical (not diagonal) square at a time without striking one of 5 randomly placed landmines. You are staked $500; prior to each play of the game you may make a wager whether you will reach your destination. You lose if you hit a mine or try to make an illegal move -- i.e., change more than one digit from your previous destination."

Your wager is applied to each game and you can continue playing games until you run out of money.

Ratliff submitted the game to DECUS (Digital Equipment Corporation User Group) and it was published in 101 BASIC Computer Games in July 1973.

Trivia
  • The games in "101 BASIC Computer Games" were written in (or converted into) RSTS-11 BASIC-PLUS by David Ahl. Sometime before December 1974 they were officially converted by Kay Fisher into OS/8 BASIC. However, Cube does not use specific features of either BASIC-PLUS or OS/8 BASIC so it is fully compatible with the earlier BASIC-8 for the PDP-8. David Ahl bought the rights to the book and had all of the games converted into Microsoft BASIC in 1978 and then TRS-80 Level I BASIC in 1979. The only differences in these releases are code comments.
  • In July 1978, Creative Computing Magazine announced they were seeking games to be marketed under the label Creative Computing Software. In September 1978 they release BASIC Computer Games on 8 inch floppies (CS-9001, CS-9002) at a cost of $17.95 per disk.
