Minefield was written for DOS in August 1992 by Paul Mills.
Minefield is a DOS-based VGA version of the popular Windows game. The object is to find and mark all of the mines in the mine field and clear the remaining squares. Minefield requires an IBM PC compatible with approximately 170K free ram, a VGA adaptor, and a Microsoft compatible mouse.
Begin by "stepping" on any square by pointing with the mouse and clicking the left button (don't worry, the program willnot let you step on a mine with your first choice.) You may have to make a few guesses until you have enough squares exposed to give you clues to the locations of the mines. When you have figured out where a mine is located, mark the mine by pointing to the square with the mouse and clicking the right button. A flag marker will appear to mark the spot. Continue until all of the mines are marked and all of the other squares are cleared. Your score is the number of seconds that it took you to clear the mine field.
The game will ask you if you want to play the beginner, intermediate, expert, or custom level. Press 'b', 'i', 'e', or 'c' to choose. If you choose custom you will be asked for the number of rows, columns, and mines that you want to use. High scores are not recorded for custom play. Start the game (and the timer) by "stepping" on any square. You may view the 5 highest scores in the beginner, intermediate, and expert levels by selecting the "scores" button on the left hand side of the screen. The time is paused while you are viewing the high scores. Select the "restart" button to start over with the same level. Select the "change" button to select a different level.
Difficult levels are Beginner (8x8 with 10 mines), Intermediate (16x16 with 40 mines) and Expert (30x16 with 99) as a direct clone of Windows Minesweeper. The one gameplay difference is that there are no questionmark options.
