Minefield - Game Overview

Minefield was written for RISC OS in 1992 by Stewart Brodie.

The object of the game is to locate and mark all the mines in the minefield, represented as a grid on the screen, and uncover all the other locations. To help you locate the mines, each square that is uncovered that does not contain a mine is marked with a number representing the number of mines in squares adjacent to it. These numbers range from zero to eight. You lose if you uncover a mine. The best time for the first three levels is recorded and a name stored.

To explode a square, click SELECT over the square. To mark a square as a mine, click ADJUST over the square (but see Queries below). To speed up the game a little, uncovering a square containing no mines will automatically explode the eight adjacent squares as well. Similarly, holding down SHIFT and clicking SELECT over a numbered square will explode all its neighbours, IF you have marked the correct number of mines around it. If you haven't marked the correct mines, one will explode and game will be over. If you haven't marked the correct number of mines, nothing will happen except that the program will show you which squares are adjacent to the current square.

The levels are 8x8 (10 mines), 16x16 (40 mines), 16x30 (100 mines) and custom (within "sensible limits"). Questionmarks are called "querys" and chording is performed by pressing [SHIFT] while clicking the left mouse button. The game can be bigger than the window so it has scrollbars.
