PMMine, Mine
PM Mine was written for OS/2 in 1989 by Curt Johnson and updated by Robert Donner in 1990. It was the direct inspiration for Windows Minesweeper.
The original version was a 16x16 grid with a custom number of mines. The object of the game was to cross from the bottom left corner to the top right corner using number clues to avoid mines. There was a countdown timer of 120 seconds and no highscores.
Later versions allowed sizes from 8x8 to 25x25 with a minimum of 10 mines and maximum of (x-1)(y-1) mines. The original "Classic" mode remained but a new "Sweep" mode was added. Sweep mode requires all mines to be marked (with a bomb icon) and all safe squares opened. Unlike Windows Minesweeper, you can only open cells adjacent to previously opened cells.
The preferences menu includes an option for 3D mode but this was never implemented. Selecting Coins adds a Coin counter (between the mine counter and countdown clock) and each hidden coin that you find lets you step on a mine without losing the game. Disabling the Ticker option removes the countdown clock. The Smart option automatically opens surrounding cells when you click an empty cell with no number. Questionmarks let you to toggle between placing bomb icons and questionmarks on cells. You can chord by holding [SHIFT] while pressing the left mouse button.
The surviving version is 2.01 from May 1990 although the About Box claims to be version 2.00. This final version was released by Robert Donner after Johnson gave him the source code for PM Mine.
Setting the countdown clock to 0 seconds instantly loses the game and can create a loop of lost game messages. Another bug is that since you always start in the bottom left corner, in a high density game the first cell can reveal a number 3 which means you are surrounded by mines and must lose on your next click.
