Minefield was written in FORTRAN by an unknown author for a Hazeltine terminal.
The object of the game is to cross the minefield from the top left to bottom right corner. In addition to hidden mines, there are visible rocks blocking your path. If you have not reached the bottom right corner in 40 moves the mine detector stops working. There are no scores but after winning or losing a game there is an option to see the mine locations.
The code credits Mike Peterson with adding terminal support. He confirmed to minesweepergame he did write several "termdef/terminfo" descriptors for devices (he was the Computer Installation Manager at the University of Toronto from 1983-1996) but was not aware of the game. Minefield is written in FORTRAN 77 (released April 1978). It does not use the curses library for terminals (released November 1978) but instead is specifically modified to work on a Hazeltine terminal.
