3D-MineSweeper was written for Windows in 2002 by Peter Kramer.
3D-MineSweeper extends Minesweeper to three dimensions. Just like Minesweeper, 3D-MineSweeper contains mines placed on a grid of squares (actually cubes) that are covered and numbered. But in 3D-MineSweeper, the grid consists of three horizontal surfaces stacked on top of each other. As in Minesweeper, the number on each square (cube) corresponds to the number of mines adjacent to that square (cube). In 3D-MineSweeper, 'adjacent' squares include squares (cubes) on the levels above and below the selected square (cube). There can be as many as 26 adjacent squares (cubes) - 6 cubes that share a side, 12 that share an edge and 8 that share a point. 9 of those squares (cubes) are on the level above the selected square, 9 are on the level below and 8 are on the same level.
The game stacks 3 grids on top of each other and has 3 grid sizes (8x4x3, 12x6x3, 16x8x3). For each size you can choose from 5 densities (2%, 4%, 8%, 16%, 32%) and 3 methods of counting mines (nearest 6, 18 or 26 squares and vertices). You win by clearing all the safe squares. The best 5 scores (percentage completed and time) for every combination is saved in the Highscore lists. 3D-Minesweeper also comes with a Demo that shows you how to play the game.
The game is Shareware for $19.95 with the free game restricted to 60 field combinations that occasionally repeat mine locations. Paying the fee unlocks "unlimited" fields and randomness.
Kramer later released this game as "3 Level MineSweeper" for iOS.
